CEBU Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy has called for an end to personality-driven and patronage politics, urging the public to vote based on an informed conscience as the country prepares for the 2028 national and local elections.

Uy delivered the message on Tuesday, Feb. 25, during the 40th anniversary commemoration of the EDSA People Power Revolution, which drew hundreds of participants in Cebu.

Asked for his message to voters ahead of the next national polls, Uy expressed optimism about the role of young voters.

He noted what he described as their growing discernment in recent elections.

“Dako kaayo’g paglaum ang mga kabatan-onan sa niaging eleksyon. Nagpakita sila nga kamao na sila mopili,” Uy said.

He said he is praying that voters would choose leaders not on the basis of personality or personal indebtedness, but on conscience and love of country.

Uy criticized what he described as patronage politics, where votes are influenced by perceived “utang na loob” or the receipt of assistance.

“Dili na ta muboto tungod lang kay naay utang kabubut-on nga wa ta masayod nga ang atong madawat nga ayuda kay ato man gyud na. Dili man na ilaha,” he said.

He encouraged voters to be guided by what he called an “informed conscience.” He described it as one shaped not only by personal understanding but also by faith and Church teachings.

“Informed meaning dili lang atong kaugalingong pagsabot, kundi pagsabot nga gibase sa atong pagtuo sa Ginoo ug sa pagtulon-an sa Simbahan,” he added.

During the same event, Uy also addressed public officials, making what he described not as a demand but a plea for reforms in governance.

“Nangaliyupo ko kanila,” he said, referring to his appeal during the Mass earlier in the day. “Mahimo ba nga magpakiluoy ko nila nga mag-usab sa pamaagi sa pagdumala?”

He called for leadership anchored on love of God and neighbor, saying many Filipinos continue to struggle amid economic and social challenges.

“Di ta maghuwat nga mawad-an ta’g second chance,” Uy said. “Katong angay nga mag-usab, angay gyud mag-usab. Katong nagtarong na, padayon, and hope you influence others also.”(TGP)
