Anti-China casket displays spark business groups’ call for investigation

CASKETS turned into vehicles for anti-China and anti-communist messages have sparked concern among Philippine business groups, which said the incidents could damage the country’s image as a destination for investments, trade and tourism.

Six major business organizations called for a swift investigation, warning that acts that spread fear and deepen divisions could also undermine economic confidence and the Philippines’ international standing.

“We, the undersigned Philippine business organizations, express our full support for the statement of the Department of Foreign Affairs condemning the recent use of caskets as instruments of intimidation and hatred,” the groups said in a joint statement, as quoted by Philstar.

The statement was signed by the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc., Federation of Philippine Industries, Management Association of the Philippines, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc.

The groups condemned the displays as irresponsible and disrespectful, saying they violate standards of decency and civility expected in a democratic society.

They said such actions could spread fear, deepen divisions and affect the country’s reputation as a place where differing views can be expressed peacefully.

The business organizations also warned that the incidents could weaken confidence in the Philippines as a safe and stable destination for investments, trade and tourism.

They cited subdued economic growth, weak foreign investment inflows and the need to further revitalize tourism as reasons for avoiding actions that could damage the country’s international image. They also stressed the importance of protecting the Philippines’ diplomatic and economic relations with China, its largest trading partner.

The groups said the potential fallout could include weaker investor confidence, fewer tourists and disruptions to trade, with consequences for the livelihoods and opportunities of Filipinos.

They emphasized that political and ideological differences should be expressed through dialogue and peaceful engagement rather than threats, intimidation or actions that incite hatred.

The organizations urged the Philippine National Police and other appropriate authorities to immediately investigate the incidents, identify those responsible and hold them accountable under the law.

They said decisive action would help maintain public order and reinforce the Philippines’ standing as a destination for investment, trade and tourism.

The groups also called on Filipinos to reject hatred and intimidation, uphold civility and mutual respect, preserve peace and national unity, and strengthen economic partnerships with other nations as the country works toward recovery, more investments, jobs and shared prosperity.(MyTVCebu)
