Dumanjug goes 2-0; Ronda tallies 1st win in Calderon Cup hoops
LIVING up to its lofty pre-tournament billing, Dumanjug cruised to a second straight by dumping Moalboal, 82-68, in the 1st Calderon Cup Inter-Town Under-21 Basketball Tournament on Friday night, March 27, at the Ronda Sports Complex in Ronda, Cebu.
Dumanjug improved to 2-0 (win-loss), coming up with yet another dominant performance after kicking off its campaign with a lopsided 99-77 win over Ronda last March 21.
Jhun Miguel Telmo was once again at the forefront of Dumanjug’s searing attack as he finished with 20 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, and a steal to win a second straight Best Player of the Game award.
Telmo mounted a 16-point, 16-rebound performance when Dumanjug drubbed Ronda.
Four other Dumanjug players scored in twin digits with Renz Nathan Villarjo adding 13 points, Carl Escuadro and Sean Mascarinas throwing in 12 markers each and Cleveron Jay Fernandez chipping in 10 points.
Jhon Ryan Abines coughed up 24 points and 11 rebounds, a solid double-double game that failed to prevent Moalboal from dropping to 1-1.
Klent Sabac tallied 12 points and Kian Chym had 11 but Moalboal, coming off a 79-57 win over Alcantara, started flat and could not recover after falling behind by 12, 15-27, at the end of the first quarter.
In the other match, host team Ronda broke into the win column by routing Alcantara, 90-59.
Joseph Rodriguez led the way for Ronda, tallying 23 points, three steals, two rebounds, and two assists to walk away with the Best Player of the Game honors.
Giving Rodriguez a much-needed support was James Pulgadas, who collected 20 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Charlie Bigno contributed 12 points in the win.
Christian Ypanto scored 12 points and Eiam Zyann Gador had 12 in Alcantara’s second loss in as many starts.(CCM)
