ALEX Eala’s campaign in the WTA 500 Abu Dhabi Open came to an end after she and Indonesian partner Janice Tjen succumbed to Slovakia’s Tereza Mihalíková and Great Britain’s Olivia Nicholls, 4-6, 2-6, in the doubles semifinals on Friday, Feb. 6, in the United Arab Emirates.
Eala and Tjen looked good early, tying the count at 4-all in the opening set only to fade at the finish.
The formidable tandem of Mihalíková and Nicholls then seized full control in the second set en route to sealing the win that set them up for a title match against Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova and Australian Maya Joint.
Alexandrova and Joint advanced to the final by beating the all-American tandem of Sofia Kenin and Desirae Krawczyk in their own semis match, 6-3, 7-6.
Alexandrova was also responsible for Eala’s elimination in the singles as she defeated the Filipina tennis sensation in their quarterfinal match, 6-3, 6-3.
Tjen’s singles campaign saw her lose to Russian Liudmila Samsonova, 2-6, 2-6, in the Last 16.(CCM)
