Gatchalian urges gov’t to take urgent action vs soaring fuel prices
A LAWMAKER is calling for urgent action to help drivers and commuters as fuel prices remain high despite expected rollbacks.
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian is pushing for the immediate suspension of the excise tax on diesel, saying current pump prices are still too expensive compared to before the oil price surge.
In a recent dzBB adio interview as reported by Philstar, Gatchalian pointed out that diesel used to cost around ₱60 per liter but is now at about ₱110 to ₱115 per liter—almost double.
He stressed that diesel is mainly used by public utility vehicles, trucks, and even generators in island areas. Because of this, he said high diesel prices directly affect drivers’ income and could impact food and transport costs.
The senator said removing the diesel tax would help ease the burden, especially since fare hikes are being controlled to avoid higher inflation.
However, he is open to keeping the excise tax on gasoline, noting that it is mostly used by private and luxury
vehicles.
The Department of Finance continues to oppose a full suspension of fuel taxes, saying it may mostly benefit wealthier consumers.
If tax suspension is not approved, Gatchalian urged the government to speed up financial aid and expand fuel discount programs for drivers.(Bhea Bianca S. Sadaya, CTU-TC BAEL-ELSD Intern)
