Heavy Bombers blast Cheetahs in Cebu City Invitationals

THE Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers lived up to their lofty billing after pulling off a wire-to-wire 78-65 win over the Benedicto College (BC) Cheetahs in the Cebu City Collegiate Invitational Basketball Tournament on Thursday night, August 6, at the Cebu City Sports Institute Gym in Barangay Sawang Calero.

Lawrence Mangubat, the wily guard from Liloan, Cebu, took charge for the Heavy Bombers as he scored a game-high 19 points to go with three rebounds, one steal, and one assist.

Christopher Hubilla backed Mangubat with 16 points while Allan Laurenaria pitched in 12 markers as JRU dominated throughout the contest to earn a piece of the lead with the University of Cebu Webmasters.

The Webmasters started their campaign with a come-from-behind 89-85 win over the University of the East Red Warriors.

Coming off a championship in Manila, the Heavy Bombers proved too much for the Chetaahs, who managed to taste the lead just once after scoring the game’s first basket.

JRU built leads of as many as 20 points, showing the kind of performance that enabled them to rule the recent Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup.

Den Ric Orgong paced the Cheetahs with 17 points.

Action resumes today at the same venue with the powerhouse University of the Visayas Green lancers debuting against the Cheetahs in the 6 p.m. first game.
