DEAD one day, appearing in public the next — rumours about Kim Jong Un’s health have repeatedly followed this pattern.

The latest claim that the North Korean leader died after suffering a brain haemorrhage has been challenged by photographs published by state media showing him touring an exhibition with his daughter.

The images, released by state newspaper Rodong Sinmun, show the 42-year-old leader at a clothing and footwear exhibition alongside Kim Ju Ae and a group of officials. According to a BBC report, they emerged hours after Chinese dissident Wanjun Xie claimed, without providing evidence, that Kim had fallen into a coma at a hospital in Beijing and subsequently died.

Xie, who identifies himself as chairman of the Chinese Democratic Party, an organization banned by Chinese authorities, alleged that Kim was taken to China because North Korea lacked the medical facilities to treat him. He further claimed Kim’s body had been secretly returned to North Korea.

The photographs do not establish when they were taken, but South Korean intelligence officials told Yonhap they had received no information supporting the death reports. Xie has previously circulated unverified claims, including speculation about the death of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The latest episode reflects the difficulty of verifying information about North Korea’s leadership. In 2020, a prominent North Korean defector claimed he was “99% certain” Kim had died following cardiovascular surgery. Kim later appeared in public, undermining the claim.

Speculation persists partly because of uncertainty over succession. Kim inherited power from his father, Kim Jong Il, in 2011 after being rapidly elevated through the political and military hierarchy following his father’s stroke in 2008. He subsequently spent years consolidating his authority.

Today, South Korea’s intelligence agency believes Kim may be preparing his daughter for a future leadership role. However, she is thought to be only 13, has not been formally designated as heir, and North Korea has never had a female leader.

Concerns about Kim’s health also contribute to recurring speculation. He is overweight and a heavy smoker, while South Korea’s National Intelligence Service has warned of his cardiovascular risks. However, these factors do not establish that he is suffering from a specific medical emergency.

Any sudden leadership crisis could have implications for North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, regional stability and potential refugee movements across the Chinese border. The United States, which maintains around 28,000 troops in South Korea, would also face significant security concerns.

With reliable information from North Korea difficult to obtain, unverified claims can gain traction quickly.

But the latest rumour remains unsupported, underscoring the distinction between speculation about Kim’s health and confirmed evidence of his condition.(MyTVCebu)
