PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday, June 22, inspected the rehabilitated Mananga River Flood Mitigation Structure, highlighting the government's efforts to strengthen flood protection measures and prevent a repeat of the devastating flooding that affected communities along the river.

The project features redesigned flood-control structures that now utilize gabion walls, a nature-based solution that helps slow the flow of water and reduce erosion.

According to DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon, the technology is a proven and effective alternative to conventional concrete structures.

“Most importantly, it slows down the flow of water,” Dizon said, noting that similar flood-mitigation measures will be implemented in other parts of the country to reduce the impact of heavy rains and flash floods.

Marcos recalled visiting the area after severe flooding struck the river system and damaged nearby communities. He said the rehabilitation included improvements to drainage systems to prevent water from accumulating behind flood-control structures after heavy rainfall.

The President also underscored the importance of maintaining no-build zones along vulnerable sections of the river.

Families living in high-risk areas are being relocated through the joint efforts of the national government, the Talisay City Government, and the Cebu Provincial Government.

Project information displayed at the site showed that rehabilitation efforts included debris clearing, repair and strengthening of damaged flood-control structures, declaration of no-build zones, and relocation of affected residents.

Dizon thanked local officials for supporting the rehabilitation efforts and announced that the government is preparing larger flood-control projects upstream.

Funding for dam projects along the Mananga, Cotcot, and Butuanon rivers has been included in the proposed 2027 national budget.

Marcos said a planned 70-meter dam on the Mananga River forms part of the administration's long-term strategy to control floodwaters before they reach populated areas.

The President assured residents that work on the river system will continue, stressing that the government remains committed to building stronger flood-control infrastructure and protecting communities from future disasters.(MyTVCebu)
