A SECONDARY school teacher in south-eastern France is in critical condition after being stabbed by a 14-year-old student on Tuesday.
According to a BBC report, the 60-year-old art teacher was stabbed three to four times in the chest during a class at La Guicharde school in Sanary-sur-Mer. The attack happened in front of about 20 students. She was taken to hospital and is fighting for her life.
The student ran away after the stabbing but was caught shortly after in the schoolyard.
Authorities said there is no sign that the attack was motivated by religion or politics.
Prosecutors said there had been tension between the student and the teacher, and the student was angry with her.
The school was evacuated after the incident, and classes were cancelled the following day.
Franceโs education minister said he was going to the school immediately and expressed support for the teacher, her family, and the school community.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in French schools. In recent years, there have been several cases of stabbings involving students. In 2020, teacher Samuel Paty was killed outside his school near Paris in an attack linked to religious extremism.(Georgia Olivar, USJ-R Comm Intern)
