DEFYING pre-election forecasts, incumbent Prime Minister Anutin Charnavirakul has claimed victory in Thailand’s general election with the ruling conservative bloc way ahead in the count.

Early returns from 90% of the ballots show Anutin’s Bhumjaithai party dominating the field with a projected 194 seats, while the reformist People’s Party trails significantly in second place with only 116, a repoirt by BBC said.

Speaking to supporters, Anutin framed the win as a collective achievement, emphasizing that his leadership would serve all citizens, regardless of their political choices.

People’s Party leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut formally conceded the race on Sunday night, acknowledging that his party would respect the voters' mandate. He stated that the reformists are prepared to return to the opposition benches should Prime Minister

Anutin successfully assembled a new governing coalition.

Replacing Paetongtarn Shinawatra, whose tenure only lasted a year, Anutin took office in 2025 only to see his initial coalition dissolve within three months. This political instability led him to call for a snap election in December 2025 to consolidate his mandate.(Mary Angel Parac, BiPSU Comm Intern)
