A RECENT immigration crackdown in Siargao has resulted in the arrest of 10 foreign nationals, including four Israelis, as authorities pursue deportation proceedings against individuals accused of violating Philippine immigration laws.

According to the Bureau of Immigration (BI), the foreigners were arrested during an operation in General Luna, Surigao del Norte last Friday, June 26, for alleged immigration violations, including overstaying, being classified as undesirable aliens, and engaging in gainful activities without the required permits.

Those arrested included four Israelis, two Chinese nationals, one Lithuanian, one Australian, one Moroccan and one Nigerian.

The BI said the operation was carried out after the General Luna Municipal Police Station forwarded reports involving the foreign nationals, who had previously been arrested for crimes they allegedly committed. The reports prompted immigration authorities to initiate follow-up investigations and deportation proceedings.

The foreign nationals are currently under the temporary custody of the General Luna Municipal Police Station while awaiting their transfer to the BI detention facility. Immigration-related charges and deportation cases are now being processed by the bureau.

The arrests come amid increased scrutiny involving some Israeli nationals in Siargao following separate incidents that drew public attention on the island.

According to an ABS-CBN News report, the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines condemned the reported misconduct of several Israeli tourists and said it is coordinating with Philippine authorities.

Israeli Ambassador Dana Kursh also urged the public not to generalize the actions of a few individuals to all Israeli visitors.

The embassy’s statement followed separate incidents in General Luna and Santa Fe, where foreign nationals were accused of harassing and intimidating local residents.

In one case, a confrontation involving an Israeli tourist turned violent after he allegedly taunted a group of Filipinos and later threw stones, injuring one person. In another incident, a group of foreigners on motorcycles allegedly blocked and intimidated a vehicle carrying Filipino passengers, including a child.

Despite the incidents, the Department of Tourism in the Caraga region said only two cases involving Israeli tourists have been recorded.

The agency has reminded both domestic and foreign visitors to respect local customs and regulations, while local authorities have reiterated that misconduct will not be tolerated regardless of nationality. (Khea Raym Lubiano, PIT Comm Intern)
