THE Municipality of Daanbantayan, northern Cebu asked assistance from the Cebu Provincial Government for its plan to rehabilitate and repair two quake-damaged wharves.

The town stwo wharves in Barangay Poblacion and Barangay Tapilon serve as transport facilities for residents, tourists, and other passengers crossing to the island barangays of Malapascua and Carnaza, as well as neighboring areas in the Visayas.

The two wharves were damaged when a 6.9-magnitude quake hit northern Cebu on September 30 followed by Typhoon Tino on November 4 last year.

The two infrastrucrues sustained pavement failure, erosion-induced undermining, settlement, and cracks.

According to the Municipal Engineering Office, the damages sustained by both Barangay Poblacion Wharf and Barangay Tapilon Wharf have an adverse impact on the structural integrity of the facilities, affecting the overall safety of the structures and posing a risk to the movement of passengers and goods, as well as the livelihood of the fishing community.

The town sees the need to repair the two facilities to ensure the uninterrupted use of the docking facilities for the transportation of goods and essential services.

A resolution sponsored by Councilor Jose Maria Gastrado said that while the Capitol has previously provided assistance for the repair of the facilities, the municipality lacks sufficient funds to undertake major damage repairs due to the extensive damage these wharves incurred during the two major calamities last year.

"The Municipality of Daanbantayan has limited financial resources for the major repair and rehabilitation of both Barangay Poblacion Wharf and Barangay Tapilon Wharf due to other damages incurred by several government infrastructures as a result of the two calamities," read the resolution approved on June 23.

Daanbantayan was among the badly hit areas when the 6.9 magnitude quake hit northern Cebu. The town recorded six injuries and several structural damage, including the Archdiocesan Shrine of Sta. Rosa de Lima in Barangay Poblacion and the Poblacion-Suba Bridge.

The bridge is still under repair. The Capitol shouldered the cost of the repair amounting to P33.3 million.(MyTVCebu)
