THE Department of Education (DepEd) is seeking increased funding to expand security services in public schools as it ramps up efforts to improve campus safety nationwide following recent incidents that have raised concerns over the protection of students and school personnel.

‎Education Sec.y Sonny Angara disclosed that only about 200 security guards are currently deployed to nearly 48,000 public schools across the country, describing the situation as a major challenge in maintaining safe learning environments. He said the department will seek additional funding from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to hire more security personnel.

‎"We need funds for our security guards. Before I assumed the position as DepEd secretary, there had been a rationalization, so security guards were removed and only 200 were retained. We have 48,000 schools and some schools need more than just one security guard," Angara said in a Philstar report.

‎Angara noted that strengthening school security remains a priority as DepEd continues implementing measures to better protect students, teachers, and other education workers.

‎Alongside its funding request, the department is expanding its nationwide School Safety Campaign. The initiative includes tighter visitor screening procedures, regular campus safety inspections, and enhanced psychosocial support programs aimed at promoting the well-being of learners.

‎Several local government units and private organizations have also stepped in to assist schools by providing security equipment. In the wake of the recent shooting incident in Tacloban City, the Tacloban Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce Inc. committed to donating 20 metal detectors to the city's Schools Division Office.

‎Similar efforts have been launched in other areas. The Maasin City local government approved the procurement of metal detectors for key school campuses, while parent-teacher associations have donated additional metal detectors and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to selected schools. Comparable security initiatives have also been introduced in Regions 9 and Bicol through partnerships involving local organizations, private companies, and school communities.(Zoe Casas PIT Comm Intern)
