Ex-Magis Eagle makes history in MPBL
NIC Cabañero went on a tear Thursday night, Sept. 10, completing a historic triple-double to lead the Biñan Tatak Gel to a 121-79 dumping of Pasig City in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Season 2026 at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan.
The former Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagle erupted for a whopping 53 points–the most points scored in a single game in MPBL history.
Cabañero’s total output shattered the previous record held by Jeff Viernes, who scored 50 points in lifting the Sarangani Marlins to a 134-123 double-overtime victory against the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards in June 3, 2023
As if his scoring outburst wasn’t enough, Cabañero also collared 22 rebounds and issued 10 assists in an eye-popping performance that helped Biñan tighten its hold on the top spot in the South Division.
Biñan will advance to the playoffs with 21 wins against only four defeats.
Pasig slid to 11-12 (win-loss).
Meanwhile, the Cebu Greats fell to the Meycauayan Marilao Gems, 79-80, ending their six-game winning streak on Wednesday night, Sept. 9, at the Olivarez College Gym in Parañaque City.
The loss was unexpected as Cebu was coming off a huge win over the defending champions Abra Weavers.
The defeat pulled Cebu down to 19-6.(CCM)
