BURNED skin and chemical injuries allegedly caused by a mixture of drain cleaner and muriatic acid have emerged in a hazing case involving more than 20 cadets at the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA), authorities said.

Three cadets were taken into custody after they were linked to the hazing incident, which allegedly occurred inside the barracks of the PNPA at Camp General Mariano Castañeda in Silang, Cavite during the early hours of April 3.

Authorities confirmed the suspected hazing was discovered on the same day, based on earlier law enforcement statements.

An initial report from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Calabarzon said at least 22 cadets were affected. It also described the trigger of the alleged hazing as a disciplinary issue involving a cadet who had expressed intent to resign, stating, “The hazing began after the plebes (freshmen) were blamed for an issue involving a cadet who intended to resign, which led to the group being punished.”

The same CIDG report noted that the three sophomore cadets allegedly involved were arrested on the night of April 7, several days after the incident was first identified.

Neither CIDG nor the Philippine National Police (PNP) provided an explanation for the gap between discovery and arrest.

Authorities said the victims sustained injuries consistent with exposure to corrosive substances, including burns allegedly caused by a mixture of drain cleaner and muriatic acid.

The three cadets have undergone inquest proceedings for alleged violations of Republic Act No. 11053, or the Anti-Hazing Act, and may face expulsion depending on the outcome of internal academy proceedings.

Investigators are also examining the possible involvement of seven other unidentified individuals. The tactical officer assigned to supervise the cadets during the incident has been relieved from duty pending investigation.

Medical treatment and psychological support are being provided to the affected cadets, police said.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said that the PNP maintains a strict stance against hazing, emphasizing accountability within its ranks.

“Let me be clear that the PNP has zero tolerance for hazing. We do not condone this. Despite our warnings, some chose to disregard the law,” he said in an Inquirer report.

He added that disciplinary standards will be enforced without exception as part of efforts to uphold professionalism in the force.

The National Police Commission has condemned the incident and ordered the creation of a task force to investigate.

Commissioner Rafael Calinisan said all individuals involved, whether directly or indirectly, will be held administratively liable without prejudice to criminal charges under existing laws, and stressed that such incidents must never occur in institutions tasked with training future law enforcement leaders.(MyTVCebu)
