No major infra damage but 6 hurt in 5.1 quake in Bogo
SIX individuals were injured while minor damage was reported in parts of northern Cebu following the magnitude 5.1 earthquake that struck off Bogo City on Monday afternoon, April 6, authorities said.
The Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said the injured, all from Bogo City, sustained minor wounds caused by shattered glass and have since been treated at a hospital.
Initial assessments showed no major infrastructure damage in the city.
“Based on the initial assessment and reports submitted by our concerned offices, there have been no reported damages to infrastructure within the city,” Bogo City Mayor Mayel Martinez said in a statement.
The earthquake struck at 3:22 p.m. at a depth of 11 kilometers and was followed by at least 15 aftershocks as of 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, based on the latest situation report.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor was tectonic in origin and is considered an aftershock of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that hit the same area on September 30, 2025.
Shaking reached up to Intensity V in Bogo City and Medellin, triggering brief panic among residents.
Power outages were reported in Barangays Cogon and Banban in Bogo City but have since been restored. Some areas also experienced temporary water supply interruptions, while transportation operations were briefly disrupted.
No evacuations were reported, according to local authorities.
In nearby San Remigio, several structures previously damaged by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in 2025 sustained additional damage.
These include the parish building and the local headquarters of the Bureau of Fire Protection.
Elsewhere, only minor structural issues were noted, including small cracks in the municipal hall of Sogod and minor damage to the third-floor annex of Juan B. Dosado Memorial Hospital.
Other local government units, including Santa Fe, Bantayan, Medellin, Tabuelan, Borbon, Tabogon, Danao City, San Francisco, Tudela, Sogod, and Consolacion, reported no major damage or casualties.
Authorities, however, noted immediate needs for tents and bottled water in some affected areas.
The PDRRMO said monitoring operations continue across northern Cebu, with teams maintaining 24/7 watch at the provincial command center.
Rapid health assessment teams have also been deployed to several towns, including Medellin, Bogo City, Tabogon, San Remigio, and nearby district hospitals, to assess needs and provide assistance.
Phivolcs earlier said the quake was tectonic in origin and warned of possible aftershocks, advising the public to remain alert.(TGP)
