Badian stuns Moalboal, captures Calderon Cup v’ball crown
BADIAN pulled off a huge suprise when it took down erstwhile undefeated Moalboal in a four-set thriller to seize the championship crown of the first-ever Calderon Cup 21-Under Inter-Municipalities Women’s Volleyball Tournament title on Sunday night, May 31, at the Moalboal Sports Complex.
Badian bucked a faulty start to chalk up a 12-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-21 victory that stunned the huge crowd that came to support the home team.
Moalboal came into the match as the favorite to win the crown after entering the championship round with a perfect 7-0 run, including a 28-26, 25-22 win over Badian in the elimination round.
In the biggest stage, Badian showed it was the better team, avenging its lone loss in the tournament and in the process secured the championship purse of P50,000.
Athena Keith Tapia powered Badian’s title-clinching win with 15 points–all via attacks. She went on to win the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Tapia also secured the Best Second Outside Spiker award. Also winning individual awards were Cecilia Gocotano (Best Setter), Erojo (Best Libero), Desiree Sabandal (First Middle Blocker), Jojie Obenita (Second Middle Blocker), Kian Meg Delocura (First Outside Spiker), Athena Keith Tapia, and Ivie Samontañez (Opposite Spiker).
Moalboal did not go home empty-handed as it pocketed P40,000 in the grassroots tournament spearheaded by Cebu 7th District Rep. Patsy Calderon.
Meanwhile, Dumanjug ended its campaign with something to celebrate after it defeated Alcantara, 25-14, 18-25, 25-23, in the battle for third place.(CCM)
