FIST OF FURY 10: ‘Angas ng Cebu’ set for ring return
JOHN Paul Gabunilas has not seen action for almost two years, a long pause driven by three straight setbacks.
But the fighter known as “Angas ng Cebu” is ready to reignite the flame of what was once considered a promising career as he is set to see action in the Fist of Fury 10: The Eliminator "China vs. Philippines" slated May 9 at the Cebu Coliseum.
Gabunilas has started his training camp with the Chao Sy Boxing Stable for his highly anticipated duel with Ramil Roda Jr. of the Omega Boxing Stable.
“My training is okay so far. It’s my first fight after a long break. Let’s see what will happen on top of the ring,” Gabunilas told Sports Ta Bai.
Personal problems contributed to his decision to take a long break, Gabunilas admitted.
The long hiatus came after the 25-year-old Gabunilas suffered three straight losses, including a devastating first-round knockout loss to Miel Fajardo at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.
Gabunilas’ morale further spiraled when he lost two more fights in Japan.
Gabunilas has apparently put those unsuccessful outings behind him. While he refused to guarantee anything, the hard-hitting boxer vowed to go all-out in his comeback fight.
“I cannot predict what would be the outcome but I will do my best come fight day,” said Gabunilas, who has 10 wins, seven by knockout, and four losses.
Roda sports a 7W-3L-2D, 4KOs record.
The upcoming card promoted by veteran sportsman Lorenzo “Chao” Sy is supported by the Cebu City Government.(CCM)
