Top seeds Johnro, CBM lead semifinalists in AEBA Corporate Cup caging
TOP-SEEDED Johnro Electrical Engineering and CBM Engineering routed their respective lower-ranked quarterfinal opponents to lead the semifinalists in the Architects and Engineers Basketball Association (AEBA) 9th Corporate Cup over the weekend at the University of San Carlos Downtown Campus Gymnasium in Cebu City.
No. 1 seed Johnro demolished No. 8 Sinclair Paints, 92-67, while second-seeded CBM trampled No. 7 Davies Paints, 81-62.
Johnro and CBM enjoyed twice-to-beat bonuses in the quarterfinals.
Jhakem Jude Alguno led Johnro with 12 points while Daniel Culanag and Jim Karl Villamor added 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
Reclear Navarro and Dave Abella powered CBM by combining for 33 points with the former firing 17 points and the latter tallying 16 markers.
The other two quarterfinal matches were played via sudden-death affairs.
Third-seeded Avantrac edged out No. 6 Dextructures Design-Build, 81-79 , while No. 5 RELLM Engineering scored an 80-68 upset of No. 4 Sports & Play International Corp., 80-68.
Joemarie Buhion keyed RELLM's resounding win with 26 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Andrew Egot added 21 points, six rebounds, two steals, and an assist, while Neil Ibarita tossed 12 points and two rebounds.
Leading Avantrac were Jemcerson Sable, Jonathan Conrad Yu, and Anton Bennett Chua, who finished with 22, 15 and 11 markers, respectively.
With the victories, Johnro, CBM, Avantrac, and RELLM advanced to the do-or-die semifinal round, which will be held on July 18. In the semis, Johnro will take on RELLM while CBM will clash with Avantrac.(CCM)
